Nothing & Everything

2 Corinthians 6:5-10

…by labors, sleepless nights, hunger, purity, knowledge, by patience, kindness, by the Holy Spirit,

by sincere love, the word of truth, by the power of God…

as grieving, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet enriching many.

having nothing, and yet possessing everything

Today’s moment in the Word, begins with a story about two men. Our story will conclude tomorrow by revealing who they are. Maybe we will know our own hearts better, too.

The men in our study initially chose material wealth over all else. Each story resolves in a different way. Their outcomes will have lasting significance, just like yours and mine do.

The first man became wealthy at the expense of people who knew him. He stole from them without remorse.

He was truly a man without a country. The only reason his supervisors liked him was because he was good for business, but he wasn’t one of them. His own people hated him.

Having everything rendered him powerless to fill the emptiness. Without the love and appreciation of people what good were material possessions?

The second man was wealthy and had political power. He looked for something to fill the emptiness. He thought that being a good guy made him acceptable to God

This man liked rules, and he knew them, backwards and forwards. The only problem was, he didn’t see the rules accurately, as they applied to him. He just knew that his material wealth was the solution to his problems. He loved his wealth more than anything.

Maybe you have reached a crossroads just as these men were about to. You could make the discovery that only one man made. The other one gave up. He walked away.

A choice.
