Psalm 119:57 The Lord is my portion; I have promised to keep your words.
Do you know what that even means?
If you are a believer, you should.
Join me for week 8 in Seed Basket’s study of Psalm 119.
In our key verse above, the Psalmist uses the phrase, “my portion.” David uses this phrase often. Do you know what that means?

The English definition of portion just means an allotment of something.
But “my portion” of God and His Word, or Law, is simply everything. It is complete and perfect. It is all that I need. It is my most priceless spiritual possession.
Maybe your next question is, “How can God’s rules be that valuable?”

This brings us to another verse in this part of the great Psalm. Look at verses 58 and 59. Notice the words – favor, promise, ways, and turned.
I have sought your favor with all my heart;
be gracious to me according to your promise.
I thought about my ways
and turned my steps back to your decrees.
Can you find the Gospel here?
Think about the four words.
Favor isn’t a material blessing. God’s goodness is our favor. Favor is grace. When the Psalmist says, “I have sought your favor.” he means the Spirit of God has led him to seek God.
Then look at the word promise. What is God’s Promise?
Jesus is God’s promise! He is everything to us—our salvation, hope, peace, forgiveness, and true love. He is my portion!
The third word, ways, means I am going in the wrong direction until I know God’s grace. My ways are lostness; God’s Way is life.
The fourth word is turn. Repent. God’s law isn’t harsh; it defines my sin. Without the Holy Spirit, I can’t see my wrongdoing or feel the need to turn from my sin toward God. With God.
My Portion.
Thank you, Lord, for being my Portion.
Lord, the earth is filled with your faithful love;
teach me your statutes. Psalm 119:64
