Give thanks to the Lord, for his faithful love endures forever. 2 Chronicles 20:21
Do you remember Jehoshaphat from Sunday School? His story is interesting. I hope you share this with your children.
Jehoshaphat’s story. 1 Kings 15-20 CSB
Jehoshaphat became the fourth king of Judah after Israel was divided into two kingdoms. His father was the wicked king Asa.
Grace is not inherited, as seen in the kings of Israel and Judah. Many bad kings ruled, but very few had good sons.
Jehoshaphat started his reign by honoring God. He removed the pagan gods the Hebrews worshipped and taught the people God’s law.
God blessed Judah because of his devotion. He kept them safe from their enemies, including the Philistines and other brutal nations.
“…stand still and see the salvation of the Lord.” 2 Chronicles 20:17
Their enemies feared Judah’s might, so they brought gifts and treasures to assuage potential hostilities. Judah had peace for a time.
But like all mankind, Jehoshaphat was sinful. He chose wickedly when he failed to honor God.
Jehoshaphat formed an alliance with King Ahab. Do you recall his story? If I tell you he was married to Jezebel, you’ll probably remember.
Ahab and his pagan wife, Jezabel ruled over Israel. He had totally turned his back on God. She was responsible for the murder of many people, including God’s prophets.
Eventually, Ahab and Jezebel were killed. And Jehoshaphat once again pursued God. He began to teach the people God’s law again.
