Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness. Your law is truth.
Psalm 119:142 (WEB)
Scripture reading for today, Psalm 119:137-144
The theme of our study in Psalm 119 has been knowing, loving and obeying God’s timeless law. We know that we don’t work to merit God’s grace. “…the Gift of God is eternal life.” Romans 6:23
A lifetime of scrupulous law keeping religion and a merciless death at the cross should have been ours to face. But that’s not God. God is full of loving kindness and mercy. But justice and the law are a part of the journey of faith to receive grace. So how does it all fit? The very end of mankind would indeed have been only death without God’s grace. But we can never know grace until we face God’s moral law. This kind awareness shows us that we are law breakers by nature. We are incapable of perfectly keeping the law even after we believe and are saved. However, after salvation, the law we once hated becomes beautiful and cherished. It breaks our hearts when we dishonor God’s law. We strive to keep it and never easily live in a lifestyle of sin. Believers can count on God’s moral law because it never changes. It is not diminished simply because mankind wants to indulge in our own feel-good lifestyle. God’s law helps us see our sin. It isn’t meant to make us walk in perpetual guilt, but to encourage us to recognize our wrongdoing and repent, leading to salvation (for the lost) and to repentance and restoration (for those who already believe by faith). When we treasure God’s law we will walk in obedience. The joy of our obedience is the abundant life. Not prosperity gospel lies. Jesus said that we would have trouble in this life. But He also said that He has overcome the world, sin and death. Love God’s Word. Bury it in your heart to help you make Godly choices. And let the light of God’s Word shine out of your heart. You will bring Him honor. You will love to love others. And your footsteps will be right in line with those of Jesus.
