Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Colossians 3:16 (KJV)
I hope you sing when you attend worship service.
Today’s devotion highlights the importance of singing to our God. It is an integral part of a believer’s life, serving as a personal expression of love and honor to God and His Son, Jesus.
Because the Church comprises many differing personalities, music ministry can be problematic and potentially sinful.
Our main goal is to live for and worship God, bringing Him glory while guarding against pride, anger, jealousy, and any sin that can divide the Church.
Causing division in the Church is serious for believers. It is rebellion against God.
Now I beg you, brothers, look out for those who are causing the divisions and occasions of stumbling, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and turn away from them. For those who are such don’t serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the innocent.
Romans 16:17-18 (WEB)

Do you attend a church that is blessed with a lot of talented musicians? That’s great if you do.
I am thankful to attend a church blessed with a Spirit filled music pastor. His love for God and the gift of music are inspiring to our church family. All of the people who participate in the music ministry always give their best efforts.
But some churches are filled with talented musicians without a heart for God.
Do you find yourself in a church that feels more like you are attending a Christian concert each Sunday where congregational singing has been reduced to a fraction of the worship time? Have talented musicians begun mostly leading worship on behalf of the congregation instead of with the congregation?
Well, may I respectfully suggest, sing anyway! James 5:13
Please read my next words. Context is everything!
We should never disrupt the order of service or complain about the music ministry.
You should be praying for each leader in your church and every facet of the ministry, including praise and worship.
Never complain about the Church to people outside the body of Christ.
The very first consideration is simply this—Jesus should be glorified with the people we call the Church.

When we don’t like the music, we should still sing! It’s not just about our own personal enjoyment. No church can satisfy everyone with something as trivial as musical taste. It’s about worshiping Jesus.
Sing every congregational song regardless of your abilities. God gave you the voice that you have. He receives glory from your heart not your skill level.
I sing out with joy when the congregation is invited to sing. I especially love songs that use Jesus’ name in the lyrics.
I have read verses about God and Jesus singing. I imagine them singing with me. It thrills my heart and enhances my praise experience for my Lord and my God.
The Lord your God is among you,
a warrior who saves.
He will rejoice over you with gladness.
He will be quiet[h] in his love.
He will delight in you with singing.”
Zephaniah 3:17 (CSB)
After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Matthew 26:30 (CSB)
God sings! And so does Jesus!
So, sing with them!

So, what should we do when there appears to be divisiveness over the worship service? Hebrews 12:15 (CSB)
First, pray about your own heart, and ensure you are not holding a sinful attitude.
When approaching a church leader, follow Biblical principles. I have linked an article below with scripture included for further clarity.
One concern that is especially important to address regarding music in the Church are lyrics that are opposed to the scripture.
When this is a concern bring the scripture and lyrics in question and explain your concerns respectfully. Be open to being taught, as you may be mistaken in your perception. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance in understanding the pastor or staff’s answer to you.
If the pastor agrees that there is a problem, give him the opportunity to deal with it.
Allow the pastor or another leader to speak to the minister of music. Pastors are responsible for all of the people who serve in any capacity in their congregation.
Keep this conversation private; it should not be shared with any others. That is gossip.
Finally, just sing!
Sing at church, home or in your car. Wherever it is appropriate, sing praise to our God. Look at all of the examples below of singing.
Psalm 7:17 (CSB) – Hebrews 13:15 (CSB) – Ephesians 5:19 (CSB) – Acts 3:1-8 (CSB)
