One who loves discipline loves knowledge, but one who hates rebuke is stupid.
Proverbs 12:1 (NASB)
What do you think about people of reasonable intellect who somehow seem to always make wrong turns in their lives? They aren’t without intelligence. They just don’t use common sense to make decisions.

Many times, these people just want things their own way at all costs. Often people like that wind up in trouble or having financial, legal or social troubles.
Folks like that just never learned the wisdom of self-control. Even when they know the outcome could cost them time, money or even their health, they continue on an unwise path.
Well, that is exactly what King Solomon was conveying in this verse.
When God’s children seek a close relationship with Him, they want to understand His desires. They yearn for His teachings and wisdom. They desire the spiritual discipline mentioned in this verse.

Discipline in this sense does not mean being chastisement. Rather, it is humbly accepting constructive criticism so you can make Godly choices. It is accepting instruction while we learn more about God’s precepts.
This is finding peace and joy while living with your hands and heart open so that God can show you His will for your life.
I don’t know about you, but I deeply want to do things God’s way. I am like a child needing instruction for navigating this life so I can honor Him.
Verse one is just the beginning of this passage.
Take the time to read the remaining verses. See the common thread among the verses. You will see that many of them talk about using our words with wisdom, being honest, and not being lazy.
So many wise concepts are compared and contrasted in this passage. This would be a great Bible study for your children. You can use object lessons and daily teachable moments to reinforce the wise way to live.
