“Blessed are the eyes which see the things that you see…“
Luke 10:23 (WEB)
Put yourself in today’s passage. Envision yourself walking with Jesus and 69 other disciples.
Imagine for a moment that you have heard Him preach, heal the sick and raise the dead.
You see and believe!

As one of the seventy you would have been specially chosen by Jesus.
“… tell them, ‘God’s Kingdom has come near to you.’
Well, that happened to seventy people appointed to be additional disciples.
Now after these things, the Lord also appointed seventy others and sent them two by two ahead of him into every city and place where he was about to come.
Luke 10:1 (WEB)
Jesus chose them. They had nothing to offer but faith and a desire to go ahead of Him. Did you see that little word, “ahead”?
Unworthy sinners were made righteous in Jesus and prepared His way.
It’s really all about Jesus. It’s not you and me that save people.
Jesus prepared them to know what to do.
Obedience and prayer.
They already had faith. They were about to see the need of the profoundly lost—for the Savior.
Then he said to them, “The harvest is indeed plentiful, but the laborers are few. Pray therefore to the Lord of the harvest, that he may send out laborers into his harvest.”
Luke 10:2 (WEB)

These glad servants must have noticed the sound of longing in His heart for lost people. They knew Christ’s love and care for themselves, and the small number of believers willing to share the Gospel.
Then, the kind Shepherd began to prepare them.
- Go your ways. I am sending you out as lambs among wolves.
- Carry no purse, nor wallet, nor sandals.
- Greet no one on the way.
- When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace be to this house.’
- If a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on him;
- but if not, it will return to you.
- Remain in that same house, eating and drinking the things they give,
- for the laborer is worthy of his wages
- Don’t go from house to house.
Luke 10:2-7 (WEB)

Jesus continued to instruct this group.
- Into whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat the things that are set before you.
- Heal the sick who are there
- tell them, ‘God’s Kingdom has come near to you.’
Luke 10:8 & 9 (WEB)
Look at the last statement above. ‘God’s Kingdom has come near to you.’
Do you fully get that? Although many people had seen God’s power with their own eyes, they rejected what they had clearly seen.
This band of disciples saw it. They saw God, the Father, because they had seen His Son. They knew the Kingdom of God was already here. They knew that the power of Satan, death and Hell were defeated.
Jesus goes on to tell these loved ones more. You can read it here. Luke 10:10-15 (WEB)
Jesus continues. “Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me. Whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.”
Luke 10:16 (WEB)
Have you ever obeyed the Spirit by sharing the Gospel? Do you remember the joy it brought you? Someone accepted Christ! You witnessed the love and power of God at work in you, bringing Him glory! There is nothing like that.
Look what happened when the seventy returned to Jesus.
The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!”
Luke 10:17 (WEB)
“…rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
Luke 10:20 (WEB)
Can you imagine watching Jesus in His rejoicing and praising His Abba? You would see a divine connection within the Trinity as Jesus honored His Father. The disciples experienced that moment in person.
In that same hour, Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight.”

Then Jesus helped His original twelve disciples understand something profound. In the passage below Jesus is referring to the Hebrew prophets and kings from ages past. (Hebrews 11:39-40)
Turning to the disciples, he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things that you see, for I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see the things which you see, and didn’t see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and didn’t hear them.”
Luke 10:22-23 (WEB)
You and I can rejoice with our Savior. There is joy in loving others like Jesus did, which gives us courage to endure pushback.
If you respectfully share the Gospel but folks reject it, that’s okay—God gave everyone free will. They’re making a tragic choice, but that’s not our business. You can’t save them; only God can.
You can still be a disciple like the seventy. Why not join their mission to share Christ with the hurting, lost world?
