For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are dying, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18 (WEB)
The Cross.
Nothing less than the power of God.
The instrument of death where Jesus Christ killed our last enemy, death.
Read that verse again. Say it aloud. Consider what it means to you as someone who knows Him deeply.
As we go through this devotion you will notice stanza’s of an old hymn. Do you recognize it? Don’t skip over the lines of these old lyrics. I believe the hymn writer must have learned to truly rely on the truth conveyed in 1 Corinthians 1:18
When peace, like a river, attendeth my way.

Think back to a time in your life that was filled with a sense of well-being and joy. Most people have at least a few memories like that. There is nothing like feeling secure. It’s as if nothing is out of control and contentment is in your grasp.
Are you watching your plans unfold just like clockwork? Everyone is healthy and happy. God is good. You feel His blessing and wonder why you deserve such peace.
When sorrows, like sea billows, roll.

But those moments are fleeting. Life always intrudes with cares and worries. This year has gotten off to a grievous start for three families who are friends of my husband and me. Three different homes are facing the sudden and unexpected deaths of loved ones. And that’s not counting four families in our church who were walking through the anticipated last days with loved ones.
So how do we, as believers, hold on in the tough times? Let’s take a look at this uplifting passage from 1 Corinthians 1.
… all who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place, both theirs and ours: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:2-3
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, it is well with my soul.

You’ve been called by God to be his own holy people. He made you holy through the work of Jesus, if you accept His salvation. He wants to give you grace and peace. Pray for those brothers and sisters who are suffering today.
Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Psalm 34:18
Thank Him if you are walking in sunlight today. Thank Him if He is walking beside you through darkness and loss. He is Light and Life wherever His children walk.
Just look at what all you have if you belong to Jesus! 1 Corinthians 1:4-9
If you were raised in church, then it is likely that you know the story behind the hymn, “It Is Well with My Soul.” In case you don’t know the story, you can find the hymn on the Internet and the story. I actually found out there is more to the story.
