Seed Basket begins a new Bible study this week. We are going to take a close look at God’s Ten Commandments.
The Ten Commandments are one of those treasures that we think we know well enough. But there is so much more to knowing them than treating them as if they were merely a set of rules to follow.
They are a rich demonstration of God’s love for you and me. Without them, we would not have a standard with which to see our sin nature. We could not know that we are lost, without being able to touch holy God.
Sinai

God’s commands are described in scripture as words from God.
Then God spoke all these words, saying…
Exodus 20:1 (NASB)
So, who were His words for? Well, at the time, they were directed to Moses and the Hebrew people. But they are timeless words; they are for all people who will be saved.

And then notice what God says –
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.”
Exodus 20:2 (NASB)
God delivered the people that He loved and set them free. You would think they would be humble and grateful, desperate for direction. For a brief period, they were.
But the Hebrew people were just like us—frail sinners who turned away from the God who saved them. They gave way to fear and despair.
Then they sinned by worshiping an idol.
God’s love is patient. God’s wrath for sin is justified.

God’s divine plan remains intact. His Ten Commandments are never so ancient that we should dispose of them. We should treasure them and teach them to our children. They will not save us, but they are integral to every sinner realizing the need for grace.
Let’s look at God’s first command.
“You shall have no other gods before Me.”
Exodus 20:3 (NASB)
Let the Holy Spirit scrutinize your heart. You may not worship a pagan golden calf, but what is there in your life that always comes before God? Always.
Don’t let your thoughts wander to others in your life. This is not a Bible study to judge or correct others. This is a moment for each of us to only consider our own heart before our Savior. This is a moment for Spiritual growth and closeness to God, who loves us every day.
Below are two verses related to this command for today.
“I am the LORD, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another, Nor My praise to idols. Isaiah 42:8
“Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father, who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.” Matthew 6:9
