The Parable of the Lost Coin – Luke 15-8-10

How did the Pharisees see people who they considered to be deplorable?
Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.”
Luke 15:1-2
Have you ever considered how God sees people?
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8
God loves people. He loved us when we weren’t even looking for Him. He loved us when we disregarded Him.
What does God do about our lost condition?
Through the work of Jesus and the Holy Spirit He:
- Seeks and saves us
- Reveals our need
- Receives us
- Makes us new
The characters in today’s story:
The Woman – represents God who seeks the lost.
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.
Luke 19:10
The Candle – represents the Holy Spirit and the Gospel revealing our lost condition.
And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
John 3:19
The Coin – represents lost people.
None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God.
Romans 3:10-11
The Broom – God’s law which exposes our sin nature so that we can be saved.
For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
Romans 3:20
And with that, let’s read this parable of Jesus-
The Parable of the Lost Coin
“Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
Luke 15:8-10
This parable of Jesus conveys God’s immense love for all people. He deeply longs for us to have the worth given to a child of God.
He knows we will never have more than the worth represented by the eternally lost coin, buried in the dirt of sin. He wants us to make us new. That only happens when we respond to His kind offer of grace. When it does, God lovingly confers all of the righteousness of Jesus and Himself upon us. (2 Corinthians 5:21)
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
