“…but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.”
John 20:31
This week, Seed Basket Devotional begins a new series about Jesus, the Lord.
When devoted believers refer to Jesus as Lord, it is an expression of willing submission. Jesus my Lord is not just a title. It is delighted surrender to God, my Savior.
Often, in the New Testament, many Bible characters referred to Jesus, as Lord. But they simply meant that He was their good teacher.
In Scripture, the very first time Jesus was referred to as “Lord” (meaning God) came from the lips of a man who struggled with doubt.

We know that Thomas didn’t believe that Jesus was alive after the resurrection. He did not believe that Jesus was the Lord God.
Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” So, he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”
Thomas loved Jesus. He wanted to believe. But can you imagine the testing of his faith after Jesus died, instead of living to establish His kingdom on Earth? The faith of Thomas had been shaken.
Jesus knows what it will take for any believer to find faith in Him. Eight days after He had been with the other disciples, Jesus went to see Thomas. (John 20:26)
Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving but believing.”
And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
John 20:27-28

Although the series begins in the Gospel of John, the rest of this devotion will focus on The Acts of the Apostles. There, we will find Jesus referred to as the Lord, ninety-two times.
I hope you will explore the true stories with me about our Lord. This is the name that every born-again believer reveres as the Name that is above every name. He is, indeed, the Lord to whom we give our allegiance, trust, and obedience.
I have linked my earlier post about Thomas, which tells you more about this often-misunderstood disciple. He really did have the qualities of courage and true friendship for Jesus.
