Memory verses for today – John 14:1-3 & 6
Believers who have walked closely with Jesus for many years all testify to the unfailing nature of His promises. He never fails to keep a single one.
“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.”
Hebrews 10:23
Promises kept…
even in the midst of the wind and waves.
That does not mean that life will be free from troubles and cares. Burdens can come unexpectedly. The icy blast of some sorrows can truly shake a believer to their core.
But the darkness in life can never rob a believer of this persistent truth.
Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’
Isaiah 41:10
The memory verses for this week ( John 14:1-3 & 6) come from a very dark and mystifying time in the lives of the disciples. They were with Jesus in the upper room, just before the crucifixion. Everything that they believed about their Friend seemed to be coming unraveled.
Jesus had already assumed the position of the lowliest slave. He had bathed each of the disciple’s filthy feet. These men could not understand. Jesus would explain that this humble act was a symbol of the sacrifice that would be required of every believer.
“What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.”
John 13:7
The disciples still did not understand what had happened with Judas, their friend and brother in the faith. So, it was no mystery that Jesus had included the betrayer’s feet in such an act of humility and love. (John 13:21-22)
Then Jesus perplexed them with this:
“Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer…Where I am going, you cannot come.”
John 13:33
Jesus was going to leave them? How could that be? They thought they had understood. Wasn’t Jesus about to set up His sovereign rule on Earth?
But Jesus began to tell them more things that they could not understand. He even predicted His death.
What was happening to the promise?
Sometimes our life can feel like that, too. Can we really depend on the promises of God? How do we explain our faith when we still face fears, disappoints and hardship? What happens when our finances are threatened, friends, and family desert us, and our health fails?
Where is Jesus in all of that? Can we still trust Him?
You bet we can!
This wonderful Gospel of John is filled with the promises of a Savior who has never failed. He has walked with every believer through every peril. What’s more, He has faced the full onslaught of the same darkness. He knows how you feel.
Our Savior sees the end of the story. He knows how your days will finally end. He and the Father have already secured your future. (John 10; Matthew 28:20)
