Here is a link to last week’s series, Know Me.
Since you have been saved by God’s grace, have you ever distanced yourself from Him?
Perhaps, long after you gave your heart to Jesus, you simply grew weary. It could have been a slow drift away from your walk with God. Maybe you felt disappointed by circumstances that you couldn’t comprehend—such as a loss, an unrealized dream, or an illness. Maybe you were caught in a sinful habit.
Regardless of the reason, deep down you know that if you are truly a child of God, you can never run away from Him. You cannot hide from God. He will always see you, no matter how far you have wandered.

It’s a comforting thought to know that nothing we do can ever separate us from His sight. Nothing can rob His love for you and me. (Romans 8:31-39)
The passage from Psalm 139 today is filled with what-ifs from the Psalmist. Maybe you have asked God similar questions.
But what is God’s response to our questions?
Read the passage and see how many affirmations of God’s abiding Prescence that you can find. I counted five.
Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.
If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,”
even the darkness is not dark to you;
The night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.
Psalm 139:7-12

Think of Bible characters who ran from God, or who felt that God had abandoned them. David, Elijah, Jonah, Hagar, Jeremiah. The list goes on. But when you know their stories, you see how God never left them. He was there all along, just as He is for you and me.
What is the assurance of our faith?
“I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.”
John 10:28
O Sacred Head Now Wounded is one of my favorite hymns from the medieval era. Two stanzas from this hymn are so meaningful to me. They are reminders of God’s power to keep me.
O make me Thine forever!
And should I fainting be,
Lord, let me never, never
outlive my love for Thee.
Come, Lord, to set me free:
these eyes, new faith receiving,
from Thee shall never move;
for he who dies believing
dies safely in Thy love.1
I can’t outlive my love for my Lord. He holds my salvation securely. God looks at me and sees Jesus, my substitute. He doesn’t see my sin.
